What is a Medium?

What is a Medium?

Your first experience with Mediumship might be from a hit show on TV. Maybe you heard from a friend-of-a-friend, or an aunts neighbor who knows a lady. Maybe you know a card reader who correctly predicted someone’s future. Well I am hear to tell you that we are not created equal. Mediums, we do have one thing in common. We have this fascinating gift that brings people closer to their loved ones in spirit.

A personal journey.

For me it started when I was young and curious about an after-life. Friends and I would play with the Ouija board for hours and hours. The lights would flicker and candles would burn out, and we would scream of delight and freight. Then we would put it away and go to sleep or plan our next sleepover. But for me, I could still hear or see things my friends couldn’t and that no one could explain to me. They would brush it off and I would move on too, thinking it was just my imagination as they would often exclaim.

As I grew older, my thoughts started to evolve. I could feel a presence, or would predict something was about to happen.  I predicted who would win a game or even correctly guess who was calling the house. During my Massage Therapy training I met someone who was involved in Reiki energy practices. I became enchanted by energy work and was eager to start learning more. The more I learned the stronger my predictions became. During Reiki sessions with my clients I started to see shadows and spirits sitting next to a client. For some reason I just knew who they were and would often say something to the client. Such as, “Who is the older male that has passed on with the big belly and dark hair?” They would look at me in astonishment that I knew who their uncle Rick was and what he had to say.

Learning the ropes

In the summer of 2017 I was guided to attend a spiritual class or find a mentor. I stumbled upon a workshop on Basic Mediumship.  It was a 2 day intensive class where we practiced reading for each other. For me I knew that this was more than just my intuition, I could communicate with spirit! I could hear them, smell them, feel how they passed, and just get a sense of their presence. I started to learn the in’s and out’s of Mediumship and how to do it ethically, with purpose and intention. In energy work, it’s all about your intention set by the practitioner or the healer. How can I help this client feel better? How can I ease their pain? Mediumship is no different. I ask the spirit what message they have, and often enough it is what the client wanted or needed to hear.

Where the fun begins.

I have learned that Spirit will lower their frequency of energy down to our level and a Medium will raise theirs up so they act as the medium ground (hence the name Medium) My instructor described it as a radio frequency. Taping into the right station to get a connection. It is as if I am playing charades with spirit. Certain symbols will always have the same meaning to me. Such as a death by accident or illness. Over the past year or so of practicing, I have learned some specific charades that spirit will use for me so I can better understand what they are trying to communicate. I have adapted to not have too many expectations on who will come forward for a sitter (client) or what spirit will say. Spirits often have the same mannerisms as they did in this physical world and clients are surprised at how I can describe what they look like or even how they are standing there. I often ask spirit to tell me something only they would know or some small detail they may have forgotten. I encourage clients to record the session as you may not recall what I am saying in the moment, but listening to the reading later will jog their memory or a relative can possibly give you more insight to something you may know nothing about.

I call myself a Novice Medium (or practicing) as my experience is limited and my gift is just starting to evolve and take shape.  I remind clients that I may not get everything right and I might mess up a name or too (it will often have a similar sound to what I am saying) but that I strive for it to be a healing session and they might get answers or the closure they are looking for. Our guides and loved ones are always there for us.

Ask them for guidance. Ask them to help raise your vibration. Ask them for healing.

Blessings, Shelley

The Season of Sniffles?

The Season of Sniffles?

Back to School and Back to Work signals back to the sniffles. This time of year it seems as if everyone and their dog is fighting off the dreaded cold these days. We know it is hard to give up your monthly awaited appointment, and you might think getting a massage could help, however we recommend rescheduling your appointment.

As Self Employed Registered Massage Therapists, when we get sick it usually means we have to cancel up to a week (sometimes longer) of appointments. Which can put a strain on our already tight schedules, and budgets.

If you are sick, unwell and unable to make your appointment please let us know within 24 hours.

Some of our GO-TO remedies we subscribe to include (but are not limited to):

  1. Stay home and Rest. Staying home helps to prevent the spread of germs and rest lets your body do what it is designed to do!
  2. Lots of Fluids.  Drinking plenty of fluids to help replenish what you are losing.
  3. HOT TEA! Warm or Hot beverages such as Tea help to soothe the throat.
  4. Garlic and Ginger. Garlic has been known to have antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and helps with nausea and digestion.
  5. Check with your Naturopath and/or Homeopath for other herbal supplements and vitamins to help boost your immune system.
  6. Cover your mouth! The best thing you can do to stop the spread of viruses are to cover your mouth/nose with a tissue/facemask or the nook of your arm. Long gone are the days of coughing or sneezing into your hands.

Prevention is also a big part. Our friends over at Family Acupuncture Wellness Clinic recommend bundling up with scarves to protect your throat and eating warm foods for the season changes.

So the next time you are unwell, please reschedule your appointment within our 24 hour cancellation policy. Rest up and Stay Healthy this season!

Insurance, How to be Proactive and Avoid the Year End Crunch

Insurance, How to be Proactive and Avoid the Year End Crunch

This happens every year. Beginning of December comes along and client after client realizes that they have $ XX amount of unused insurance towards Massage Therapy. They beg and plead to get in for a treatment as soon as possible, however we are all booked up for the remainder of the year. It is hard for us to turn away clients so we decided to help you out so you can avoid the year end crunch next year! Let’s be proactive and help you start the year off right! We couldn’t think of a better way!

Here are some calculations we did to help you utilize your health insurance and get the most out of your plan. We also suggest booking 1-2 months in advance. It is much easier to cancel an appointment because something came up or you got invited to something last minute than it is to try and get in for a treatment last minute.

  • 60 minute $75=  80% is $60
  • 45 minute $60=  80% is $48
  • 30 minute $50=  80% is $40
  • 90 minute $105=80% is $84

Scenario 1. You have $500/yr of Massage Therapy coverage at 80%

  • You can have 8.3 – 60 min treatments a year or once every 6 weeks
  • You can have 10.4 – 45 min treatments a year or once every 5 weeks
  • You can have 12.5 – 30 min treatments a year or once every 4 weeks
  • You can have 5.9 – 90 minute treatments a year or once every 8 weeks

Scenario 2. You have $350/yr of Massage Therapy coverage at 80%

  • You can have 5.8 – 60 min treatments a year or once every 8 weeks
  • You can have 7.2 – 45 min treatments a year or once every 7 weeks
  • You can have 8.75 – 30 min treatments a year or once every 6 weeks
  • You can have 4.16 – 90 min treatments a year or once every 12 weeks

Scenario 3. You have $850/yr of Massage Therapy coverage at 80%

  • You can have 14.16 – 60 min treatments a year or once every 3.5 weeks
  • You can have 17.7 – 45 min treatments a year or once every 2.9 weeks
  • You can have 21.25 – 30 min treatments a year or once every 2 weeks
  • You can have 10.11- 90 min treatments a year or once every 5 weeks

Scenario 4. You have NO INSURANCE

  • $75 for a 60 min treatment every 4 weeks=13 times a year. This works out to $975/yr or $81.25 a month
  • $75 for a 60 min treatment every 5 weeks=10 times a year. This works out to $750/yr or $62.50 a month
  • $75 for a 60 min treatment every 6 weeks=8 times a year. This works out to $600/yr or $50 a month.
  • $60 for a 45 min treatment every 4 weeks=13 times a year. This works out to $780/yr or $65 a month
  • $60 for a 45 min treatment every 5 weeks=10 times a year. This works out to $600/yr or $50 a month
  • $60 for a 45 min treatment every 6 weeks=8 times a year. This works out to $480/yr or $40 a month.

Our goal to show clients the value of our work and their treatments and recognize that preventative measures will lead to overall better health. We hope our clients can begin to see the importance of self care and maintenance regardless of the absence of health coverage. The more you put into your health, the more you get out of it.

**(Scenarios are just an example of the most common insurance coverage amounts we see. If yours is not listed here we would gladly figure out what you’re allotted for treatments. Please check your insurance coverage to see what you qualify for and what the stipulations of your coverage entails. (Ex. yearly dollar amount, Rx, cost allowed per visit or if you have a  deductible) These calculations are merely to show you how you can equally divide up your insurance for the calendar year so you can get the most out of your plan.  Payment is due at the end of your treatment time and direct billing is at the sole discretion of the Therapist. Please check with your therapist before your treatment)

What is Reiki?

What is Reiki?

by Shelley Mota, RMT, Reiki Master Practitioner, Novice Medium and Part Owner of New Moon Massage Therapy and Wellness Centre

For a while now, my clients have asked me what Reiki is and why they should try it. The very question in of itself means you have been guided to try it!

For over a decade I have been practicing Reiki and over the past 5 years or so I have been a Reiki Master. All that really means is that I can teach it and pass it down to other practitioners. Still to this day, I have a hard time breaking down into words how remarkable it is and the experiences I have shared with my clients.

Ok, SO what IS IT exactly? Reiki, quite simply, means “spiritually guided life force energy.” It is a Japanese technique that has been around for ages. While the method we use today was formulated in 1922, the practice of Reiki has evolved over the years as it has been passed down from Master to Master, however the principles and the core values remain the same.

It is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. Reiki addresses the whole person, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. It works by removing blockages of energy that are causing issues such as pain, restlessness, anxiety, balances organ function and many others. These days, most of my clients have some form of anxiety or depression that is holding them back in some way. They feel “out of sorts” and seek me out. Some clients question if it is safe because of their current medications or treatment they are receiving from their primary care providers, but because Reiki is guided by our consciousness and intentions set by the practitioner it can only do good, never cause harm. The Reiki will go to where it is needed and is appropriate for every condition. It has no dogma and is not a religion so anyone can use it.

Every Reiki Practitioner treats differently just as every massage therapist is different. Some say it has layers like an onion, each visit and each treatment reveals another layer, and no two sessions are the same because you are different. Every experience you have had in your life has had an impact on who you are, and therefore you will continue to grow spiritually.

The treatment itself involves laying of hands in a series of hand positions across the 7 Chakras, from your head, abdomen and body and then to your feet. I personally incorporate healing crystals such as Clear Quartz or Rose Quartz to intensify the treatment. Most clients feel a warm or cold sensation, tingling in old injuries or they feel like they are in a dreamlike state, often saying they felt as if they were napping but were still awake! Some clients are more attuned to their energy and will see colors or have visions, every session is different and truly remarkable! I also Smudge the room, both myself and the client with Sage to help cleanse the air and energy before and after a session. Since I am also a Novice Medium, I sometimes receive spiritually guided intuitive messages for my clients. (more on that later!)

The Healing Crisis or Process?

After a treatment you may go through what some may call a healing crisis. I prefer to call it a process, because that is what I aim for. A process of self discovery. In getting to know yourself, your body, your emotions, what is holding you back from the life you want? What is preventing you from achieving the life you strive for?

You may feel the need to make healthier choices in your life. Drink more water. WATER. The answer is always more water. Eat healthier, go to sleep earlier, remove yourself from situations that no longer serve you and start to make connections with people that do! A physical change can happen as well. When a healing has taken place your organs are now operating at a higher frequency. You may feel like you are detoxing as it is the body’s way of ridding itself of what it no longer needs to hold onto. It is however, important to note that this does not happen after every treatment, but when it does, just know that you have received a deeper level of healing!

I will leave you with this. The Reiki Ideals, adapted.

Reiki Ideals:

Just for Today, I release anger thoughts and feelings

Just for Today, I release thoughts of worry

Just for Today, I am grateful for all my blessings

Just for Today, I am working with honesty and integrity

Just for Today, I am kind to all living things
